The Hill is reporting that business groups will target Democrat Rep. and Senate hopeful Paul Hodes during the Labor Day break with events designed to highlight his record on workplace issues:

Business groups plan to go on offense against vulnerable Senate Democrats in their backyards to mark Monday’s Labor Day holiday.

Local groups will target Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Rep. Paul Hodes, the Democrat running for Senate in New Hampshire, and Kentucky Senate Democratic candidate Jack Conway in their states over their record on labor-related issues.

Local chapters of groups like the National Federation of Independent Business, state Associated Builders and Contractors, and other commerce and retail gropes will hold events on Monday targeting the incumbents and candidates, particularly on their stance on the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA, or “card check”).

The events are part of coordinated efforts by the business groups to put pressure on Democrats on Labor Day, a national holiday traditionally celebrated by the organized labor community.

One would think that when your campaign has hit bottom in the eyes of people watching the race for U.S. Senate, you would at least try to build bridges with constituencies that are not currently in your camp.

Democrat Senate hopeful Paul Hodes is getting creamed in the polls, getting creamed even worse in the press and is burning through his campaign money with such reckless abandon you would think it belonged to the taxpayers.

But he is still hugging the special interests who brung him to the dance: Big Labor. And in the process he is sending strong signals to the small business community that he isn’t even interested in talking.

In fact, here’s a video of Hodes at a recent campaign event in July singing the praises of card check or the Employee Free Choice Act, which is currently languishing in the U.S. Senate:

Mitt Romney.

“[The Employee Free Choice Act] would be a black cloud on entrepreneurship in this country and to small business,” said Romney during a media conference call today hosted by the Workforce Fairness Institute, an anti-EFCA organization. “And if we want to see entrepreneurship in this country collapse, EFCA is the surest way to do this.”

Romney further urged people to focus less on the secret ballot controversy and more on the binding arbitration provision, which would permit the federal government to dictate employment contracts between small business owners and employees.

“This act represents and unprecedented attack on the individual rights of American citizens and American workers,” state Romney.

Labor unions and Democrats have lost ground over the past couple of weeks in their efforts to pass EFCA. Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) recently came out in opposition to the bill. Both senators had previously been on the fence.
