In an exclusive interview with Now! Hampshire publisher Patrick Hynes, Sen. John Sununu touted his record on environmental issues and staked his claim to the middle ground in the race to maintain his US Senate seat against the Democrat he beat in 2002, former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen.

While stressing his conservative governing philosophy, Sununu distanced himself from some unpopular Republican policies.

“Congress has not done a good enough job of minding the budget and controlling spending. That’s put me in the position of voting against a lot of Republican-sponsored legislation,” Sununu said before ticking off several examples including the 2005 energy bill, the Medicare prescription drug bill and a highway bill he said “broke the budget.”

Sununu also touted his authorship of the New England Wilderness Act, a measure he says he wrote “in conjunction with conservation groups in New Hampshire.” The law protects 35,000 acres of forest.

A new University of New Hampshire survey shows Sununu trailing Jeanne Shaheen by twelve points, 52% to 40%.
