The Boston Celtics will hoist their seventeenth NBA championship banner after last night’s game six drubbing of their storied rivals the Los Angeles Lakers. The Celtics’ 131-92 victory ends a decades long championship drought for the franchise and caps off one of the greatest single-season turn-arounds in sports history.

Superstar Paul Pierce takes home championship MVP honors. And somehow the idea of Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen comprising a new age “Big Three” no longer seems an insult to the memories of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish.

The Celtics win last night puts another trophy on the shelf for New England sports fans after the Boston Red Sox won the 2007 World Series and the New England Patriots won the 2008 AFC Championship, but lost the Super Bowl due to a lackluster effort.
