Country club owner and US senate candidate Bill Binnie can’t seem to make up his mind.

As was previously reported by Now Hampshire, Binnie has had numerous positions on the state of Arizona’s new immigration law. At first Binnie came out in favor of the law, defending it at a recent St. Anselm’s College debate, as was reported by NECN. But Binnie then opposed the law at another debate just a week later. The Union Leader reported that Binnie was the only Republican candidate to oppose the law at the debate, and drew sparse applause when he said that “we are less than we were before we had it.”

And now another week has passed and Binnie has reversed himself again. Now Hampshire has learned that the vacillating candidate is now running radio ads seemingly backing the Arizona law, saying that “the Arizona situation and our illegal immigration problem is typical of Washington failure. People in Arizona are frustrated—and they acted because the federal government didn’t.”

In addition, Binnie also reverses himself on amnesty for illegal aliens. While the Washington Post reported on Binnie’s support for amnesty, the end of his new ad specifically says “not amnesty, but a legal plan all Americans can support.”

When asked about Binnie’s fluctuating stance on issues, one long-time NH political insider just shrugged and replied, “Wait another week and he will probably reverse himself again.”

Perhaps succumbing to the pressures of the Democrats’ declining fortunes in the Granite State former Democratic State Chairman Kathy Sullivan appeared to come unglued on WMUR’s Close-Up on Sunday.

Sullivan, wearing what can only be described as Sarah Palin glasses, repeatedly interrupted fellow guest Republican consultant David Carney’s comments with wild, penetrating cackles of uncomfortable laughter. Then after routinely saying Republicans were lying – about virtually everything – Sullivan lost her discipline when Carney accused her of lying about the state budget process.

The incident follows a series of bizarre escapades by Sullivan who can be seen at Aldermanic meetings in Manchester glaring at Republican Mayor Ted Gatsas while furiously writing notes. Some have wondered if Sullivan herself donned a bunny costume to appear in a notoriously campy—and widely ridiculed—Democratic web video recently.

Republican spokesman Ryan Williams cracked wise about the encounter.

“Lynch, Hodes and Shea Porter’s declining poll numbers, the failure of Obama’s economic policies and the sinking realization that Democrats are going to get trounced in November – it’s all taking a toll on poor Kathy’s mental stability. Republicans hope that Kathy gets the professional help she needs to cope with her grief during this difficult time for Democrats,” William said.

GOP Senate candidate Bill Binnie raised eye-brows yesterday when he openly stated that his strategy was to appeal to moderates and hope that former AG Kelly Ayotte and Manchester attorney Ovide Lamontagne split the conservative vote.

The former plastics businessman and race car driver made the remarks yesterday in The Hill, stating that he saw the race as being between him and Ayotte, with Lamontagne playing the role as spoiler, as Lamontagne would only pull social conservative votes away from Ayotte. Binnie is pro-abortion.

Binnie was quoted as saying that “We internally think this race is between Kelly and myself” and “The stronger that Mr. Lamontagne does, frankly, the better for my candidacy.”

For its part, the Lamontagne campaign took issue with Binnie’s statement. Campaign advisor Jim Merrill responded that “”Mr. Binnie clearly thinks that his millions of ad dollars allow him to take the voters for granted, a full five months before our primary election. As a newcomer to civic engagement in New Hampshire, Mr. Binnie clearly doesn’t understand that he cannot buy the trust of the voters. He must earn it.”

Binnie has staked out moderate to liberal views on most issues. In addition to being pro-abortion, he is pro-gay marriage and supports amnesty for illegal aliens.

The National Republican Congressional Committee’s candidate in New Hampshire’s first district Frank Guinta is beginning to hit a rough patch on his way to the GOP nomination to take on Democrat Rep. Carol Shea-Porter.

Earlier this week, CQ Politics reported that the NRCC has backtracked on their early endorsement of Guinta and are now “letting the primary play out.” As recently as late-March Guinta was still the national Republicans’ candidate.

And on Friday, WMUR and the University of New Hampshire survey center released a new poll showing Guinta’s public image is in decline. “Currently, 22% of 1st CD adults have a favorable opinion of Guinta, 18% have an unfavorable opinion of him, and 59% are either neutral or don’t know enough about him to say. Guinta’s net favorability rating is +4% and has continued to decline from +22% a year ago,” write Smith in a memo on the poll.

Guinta’s campaign has been plagued by lackluster fundraising. He has been given a year to exploit national Republican resources to clear the GOP field. Nevertheless other candidates have entered the race, including Rich Ashooh and businessman Sean Mahoney.

Monday’s Washington Post article noted that GOP senate candidate Bill Binnie has a history of supporting Democrats. Now! Hampshire has learned that in a 2003 Chicago Tribune story Binnie was quoted as saying “I don’t like the Republican Party because I am pro-choice.” Binnie is identified in the story as a 2000 Bill Bradley supporter and refers to himself as “intellectually liberal”.

The article goes on to say that Binnie has a history of voting for Democrats, wasn’t supporting the 2004 re-election of President George W. Bush, and was looking at the Democrat field, which at the time included John Kerry, John Edwards, and Howard Dean. The article says that Binnie was leaning towards Wesley Clark but had not yet made up his mind.

This is not the first time that questions have been raised about Binnie’s GOP credentials. The Union Leader’s John DiStaso has noted that the former plastics businessman and race car driver contributed to Democrat Martha Fuller Clark in her congressional race against Republican John E. Sununu, as well as to Democratic congressional candidates in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

Binnie has staked out liberal turf for himself in the GOP primary, supporting abortion, gay marriage, and amnesty for illegal aliens.

An unusual mix of immigration reform supporters held a press conference today in Concord. While it is not too often you see a former Republican Party chair and The New Hampshire Citizens Alliance standing behind the same podium together – today appeared to be that exception.

In an effort to bolster comprehensive immigration reform legislation efforts in Washington, Former NH GOP Chair Fergus Cullen highlighted the economic reasons for reform. “We have students coming from overseas to study at UNH graduating with MBAs and PhDs”, Cullen said. However, instead of staying in America to work he pointed out that many are choosing to return to their native countries. Cullen called this exodus “nuts” and referred to Senator Gregg’s supportive comments favoring reform.

Also at the table, Former Ambassador to Belize turned immigration lawyer George Bruno pointed out that Senator Gregg, Senator Shaheen, Congressman Hodes and Congresswoman Shea-Porter have all come out with support for immigration reform before year end. Bruno also pressed for support of a New Hampshire State Senate resolution – currently working its way through legislative channels – calling for comprehensive immigration reform.

John Young of the New England Apple Growers Council pointed to complications in the immigration process for temporary workers stating, “It’s just not working.” Young stated that, “For every job lost by migrant workers, five jobs are lost up and down the chain”, referring to the closing of farms and jobs lost by distributors.

As the immigration debate continues to boil, Now Hampshire.com will be there as it happens…

Today the US Senate is set to vote today on a procedural vote to move the Consumer Financial Protection Act of 2009 forward. The CFPA legislation is Congress’ most current attempt to overhaul the American financial system and prevent the predatory lending and risky derivative practices from Wall Street firms from hurting taxpayers.

Support for CFPA has remained divided along party lines. Senator Gregg who sits on the Senate Banking Committee as well as subcommittees on financial institutions, securities and investments, has spoke in opposition to the bill said it was “about as far to the left as you could get.”

Congressman Hodes in his bid for Senator Gregg’s vacating seat, last week took aim at Gregg and Republicans for not supporting the Democrats version of financial reform. Hodes called for Gregg to stand up for New Hampshire families and not that of the “big banks of Wall Street”.

Sources close to NowHampshire say that Republicans, who appear to remain unified against CFPA, remain concerned that the resulting Consumer Financial Protection Agency will result in the complete takeover of credit and banking by the federal government.

NowHampshire will continue to follow post-vote developments as they happen….

First, Fosters’ Daily Democrat poured cold water on his campaign finance bill. And then a Democrat polling firm released a new survey showing he’s (still) losing to GOP frontrunner Kelly Ayotte in the race to replace Sen. Judd Gregg.

But then Hodes sent out a snarky press release in which he accidentally admitted defeat altogether. In the release, in which Hodes implausibly blames Wall Street corruption on Kelly Ayotte [?], Hodes refers to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who is, of course, the Senate Minority Leader.

But perhaps only for a few more months.
