This is truly a fascinating turn of events. Shea-Porter’s dogged defense of President Obama’s health reform push has at times created a circus-like atmosphere around the third term Congresswoman. For weeks in August she refused to meet with constituents in a town hall setting to discuss reform efforts. She called opponents of health reform “teabaggers.” When she finally relented under pressure from even liberal editorial pages to host a town hall meeting, the thing devolved into a carnival; a retired police officer was actually removed from one of her events.
Her vote against final passage will flip her comment that “[t]oday, I was proud to stand on the right side of history and vote in favor of comprehensive health care reform,” on its head.
To make matters even more awkward for Democrats, the state party this week again criticized Republicans for attempting to kill the bill. How will they react if one of their own joins all Republican members in killing it?
She is changing her mind only because she really, really likes it in Washington. Too late Carol. What is the next thing yuou’re going to waffle on?
