Shea-Porter sounding less bullish on health bill

There was a time when Democratic Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) condemned opponents of President Barack Obama’s health care reform push as “tea baggers.” But these days it’s sounding more and more like Carol Shea-Porter herself opposes what Obama is trying to do.

On Thursday, Shea-Porter’s office criticized the so-called “Cornhusker Kickback” deal that would give the state of Nebraska free Medicaid money:

Shea-Porter spokesman Jamie Radice said the Congresswoman is “not happy” about the deal that was negotiated with Nelson.

“There are a lot of differences between the House and Senate bills, and that is what is being negotiated now,” Radice said.

Also on Thursday, Shea-Porter criticized the tax on so-called Cadillac health plans being pushed by Obama, saying it would hurt middle class families, a comment that could become problematic for her if she ultimately votes for the bill:

About 100 House Democrats spoke for roughly 90 minutes on Thursday afternoon about the negotiations to finalize the health care legislation, which is the top domestic priority for Mr. Obama and Democratic Congressional leaders.

Representative Carol Shea-Porter, Democrat of New Hampshire, who spoke out forcefully against the proposed exicse tax, said afterward that it could hurt middle class families.

“I was standing up for my constituents,” she said in a statement. “I have serious concerns about the excise tax proposal and the effect that it could have on middle class families in New Hampshire and across the country.”

Shea-Porter’s criticisms are especially problematic for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi was so confident of Shea-Porter’s support she invited Shea-Porter to speak at the unveiling of the House version of the health bill.
