Shea-Porter Refuses to Apologize for Using “Tea-Bagger” Phrase

The Portsmouth Herald is reporting that the Portsmouth Republican City Committee is demanding an apology from Rep. Carol Shea-Porter for using the phrase “tea-baggers” to describe opponents of health care reform. But the embattled congresswoman is having none of it:

On Wednesday, Shea-Porter told the Herald she was simply repeating a term widely used in the media since “Tax Day Tea Parties” were held throughout the country in April in protest of government spending, particularly President Obama’s stimulus package.

“I’m not going to apologize for using a phrase people in the media, including Neil Cavuto on Fox News and CBS News, have used,” Shea-Porter said. “If they do not want to be called that, I won’t call them that.”

When asked about the sexual connotation of the phrase the PRCC alleges, Shea-Porter said she was just repeating a “phrase she heard used many times by members of the media.”

A new NowHampshire.com poll shows Shea-Porter has been badly damaged as a result of the August recess health care debate.

I received a response from the Congresswoman. It is exactly what I expected:

Thank you for contacting my office and sharing your thoughts with me regarding my comments to tax protesters in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

The term ‘teabaggers’ has become a widely used term to describe citizens who are protesting the current agenda of the Administration and Congress. A variety of news networks and programs, including Fox News with Neil Cavuto, CNN with Anderson Cooper, and MSNBC with Rachel Maddow have used the term ‘teabaggers’ to describe the protestors or protests being held.

Thank you again for contacting my office. It is a privilege to serve you in Washington.

    Sincerely,

    Carol Shea-Porter
    Member of Congress

  2. CSP should apologize and let it die. It’s better to be gracious to your constituents than to be “self righteous”. Too bad she has forgotten how powerful and effective the words “I’m sorry” can be.

That’s the best excuse she can come up with?! That “the media made me do it” (and Cavuto, afaik, was only quoting others using it)?! Wow, the only downside to this situation is that I’m in the wrong district to help vote CSP out of office in 2010.
