Confusion Reigns over Ayotte’s Abortion Stance

A respected pro-life news website labeled U.S. Senate candidate Kelly Ayotte as “pro-abortion” in a news story this morning, once again drawing into question the recently resigned attorney general’s political positions.

Highlighting the challenges facing pro-life candidates leading up to the 2010 elections, Steven Ertelt writes in Life News,”[t]he races in which Republicans may fare well involve pro-abortion candidates — including Mark Kirk in Illinois, Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire.”

If true, this would appear to contradict what New Hampshire pro-life activist Karen Testerman told NowHampshire.com last week.

“Yes, I have discussed the issues with [Ayotte]. Yes, she is pro-life, pro-marriage between one man and one woman and pro-second amendment,” Testerman told us.

We contacted the Ayotte campaign, but they offered no response to clarify the discrepancy.

A Republican source later told us to check the site again because Life News would be omitting any reference to Ayotte in the story. This turned out not to be true. Instead, Ertelt charged the reference to Ayotte to read, “In New Hampshire, Kelly Ayotte is running but she is not regarded as pro-life.”

It may be some time before the matter of Ayotte’s abortion stance is cleared up. She is speaking for the first time as a candidate on Tuesday night in Wolfeboro, but the Concord Monitor reports video cameras have been banned from the event and a source tells NowHampshire.com has learned Ayotte will not be taking questions.
