Sotomayor Enters Confirmation Process with Miers-Like Numbers

Sonia Sotomayor will begin her confirmation hearings next week with some of the highest levels of public opposition of any Supreme Court nominee in the last two decades, according to a new poll by CNN and the Opinion Research Corporation.
In fact, only one nominee had a higher level of opposition: Harriet Miers, who was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2005. Miers later withdrew her nomination under questions about her qualifications from both the political left and right.
Forty-seven percent of respondents to the poll say they would like to see the U.S. Senate vote to confirm Sotomayor versus forty-percent who say they would not. In the final CNN poll taken before Miers withdrew her nomination, forty-three percent of respondents said the Senate should oppose her confirmation.
No other recent nominee, not even Robert Bork, whose own nomination under President Ronald Reagan was scuttled, faced public opposition this severe. In the last poll taken during the Bork confirmation fight, thirty-eight percent wanted to see him confirmed versus thirty-five percent who did not.
All other nominees polled by CNN—Clarence Thomas, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, John Roberts and Samuel Alito—enjoyed wide margins of public support.
Interestingly, independents are split down the middle on Sotomayor. Forty-two percent believe she should be confirmed. Forty-one percent believe she should not be confirmed.
The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey was conducted from June 26 to 28, with 1,026 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey’s sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
I just have one question – when she becomes a Supreme Court Justice, who will be able to overturn her new decisions?
She has expressed raicist views more than one time. She used her racist views in at least one of her court decissions which was over turned by the Supreme Court. She has even said the court is where policy is written. Knowing all this I do not understand why anyone think she is qualified for the Supreme Court.
She is a “token” nominee. The news calls her the first hispanic nominee…WRONG. She is the second, but that does not fit the template because the Democrats and Media destroyed the fist hispanic nominee for no better reason than to do it.
I don’t care where nominees comes from, but what comes out of the automoton’s
mouth.
As for “I served drinks in Vietnam”,
If there are too many firemen then refuse help in an emergency.
Sotomayor is a disaster. If she gets in it means our justice system is a joke.
Throwing out the tests that find the most qualified people for the job to force quotas on to life saving fields of work. Sounds like the qualities I want in a position that can have an impact on freedom. Or maybe someone with common sense would be better. Maybe she wants someone filling a quota in charge of saving her life, I would rather have the guy who scored the highest regardless of their color.
Sotomayor is in all praticality a political jurist intent on inserting her world view as a substitute for law. Some of us, including me, a south Texas Hispsnic Latino Spaniard, or whatever Washington is characterizing us as today, simply beleive we are Americans, and in turn bound by applicable laws, regardless of how they may impact one group or another. For instance we beleive immigration is a silly issue, only in that reason demonstrates we have a law which clearly states coming into our country is in fact illigal, period, and that law should be duly enforced sans polital interference. Sadly, fact and duty to US law are circumvented by those seeking and intoxicated with power, or beholden to such. Sotomayor is such a person, apllyimg empathy or sympathy instead of law, a path where anyone’s priorities may circumvent what makes us great, the ability to apply laws sanctioned by the people. Would we not all not wish to pick and chose, via our own rationality whch laws we obey or not. I enjoy drinking while driving, and why could one not rationalise robbing a ‘small’ bank, something less offensive than a large one. All these actions have the same relative impact, the wrong people win, and the wrong people lose, as clearly stated in our laws.
Lastly, that “Wise Latina” crap is arrogant and leads to the inevitaqble question, will she be able to answer that 3am call, or will she be making menudo and juevos rancheros for the otherl efty loons while frolicking though the Constitution as they take justice from the deserving and awkwardly pander it to the underserving willing.
Obama couldn’t care LESS about who she is or what she believes. He wants a judicial activist, AND WANTED to pick a female Latina. Period.
If she was the SAME person, with the same qualifications, experience and views AND WAS ASIAN… she wouldn’t have been picked.
Proves Obama is a racist. He picked her BECAUSE of her sex and race. It’s allowed because she’s not white, asian, or male.
Even lefties know that’s true.
Her SAT scores were not good enough to get in to Princeton but Affirmative Action got her in.
Her score on the Law School was not high enough to get into Yale Law School but Affirmative Action got her in.
Her radical views should bar her from the Supreme Court but Affirmative Action (the Democrat controlled Congress) will get her approved.
If she were a main stream white woman, Obama would not have even nominated her. The only question we have about her is will she be further to the left than Ginsberg?
2nd time:
1. over ruled 60% of time by SC
2. continues to made rasist statments over the years
3. belives the court should make the laws
4. belongs to a radical latino organization
5. belonged to an all female elite group
6. supports BO in his following of Chicago’s Saul Alinsky’s marxists
principles
She is even better than Ginsburg!!!
1. Over ruled 60% of the time by the supreme court.
2. Has continued for years to make racist statements.
3. Belives the court is where laws are make.
4. Belongs to a radical latino organization.
5. Belonged to an all female elite group.
6. Agrees with BO and the radical Saul Alinsky model of marxism.
She would be better than Ginsburg!!!
This is not as much a political question as an emotional one. (Although politics is a highly charged subject on its own). The Emotional equation here was well analyzed in the blog post

Certainly a different perspective.
I think the issue with Sotomayor is that she is somewhat dull witted. She has been groomed for this by the liberals for 20 years because of her race. However, she really isnt very smart.
Eric says: “Sotomayor will be great. Let’s face it – the rule of law is biased against people of color. We need someone on the court that will interpret the law (Pres. Obama uses the term “empathize”), so that the law applied is corrected for that particular person/case in front of her.”
Putting aside the trite leftist baloney about judicial bias against minorities, so now we need black rulings, white rulings, Hispanic rulings, Asian rulings and Muslim rulings?
Making decisions based upon “empathy” — ie, putting aside the facts and the law and making decision based upon a feeling of kinship with a particular side is not justice — that’s a PERVERSION of justice. Dimwit.
Dear I Served in Vietnam,
Be sure to request a nonwhite firefighter the next time you need help.
Please!! Do you know how hard it is to get into that profession as a white male???
This is kind of surprising. Although her decisions are slanted to the left, they are still firmly within the mainstream. And Harriet Miers was clearly an unqualified, Bush crony hack, while Sotomayor is undoubtedly qualified given her appeals court experience. The way I see it, most of the opposition to her is rooted in her speeches, not in her decisions.
I Served in Vietnam says: “I think she will make a WONDERFUL JUSTICE. We have too many white firefighters now anyway.”
You can take the Democrat out of the old racist south, but you just can’t take the old racist south out of the Democrat.
Ms. Sotomayor has stated she is “Puerto Rican, born in the Bronx.” Uh, last time I checked, the Home of the YANKEES is STILL in NEW YORK CITY! Gee, being from Brooklyn, I’m CERTAIN that the Bronx is part of NYC! If being AMERICAN isn’t good enough for her, let her go be a judge in Puerto Rico! By the way, before anyone starts yelling “racist,” I’ve been married to a South American immigrant, a PROUD NATURALIZED AMERICAN since the 1970′s, for over 25 years! No way does Ms. Sotomayor belong on our Supreme Court, NO WAY!
Those whom oppose Sotomayor are not judging her on the color of her skin. Rather, they oppose the color of her politics.
To any objective bystander, Sotomayor is very much to the left. Previous nominees who were very much to the right were routinely rejected by the left. The difference here is that the conservative dems may vote with the GOP in order to represent what their constituents want. Or else face the music in the next re-election.
Obama nominated her, I trust his judgement. If there is one thing that is sure it is that Obama is a great judge of character. Through his career he has surrounded himself with the best and the brightest. His mentors, pastors, counselors and friends are simply the best America has to offer. Of course there is politics in plan so there is always going to be a little bit of flack against anything that Obama does but all this hype about racism thats just Republican sour grapes at losing the election. Ms. Sotomayor simply could never be a racist, I mean that would be sort of like saying Obama wasn’t really an American citizen, laughable don’t you think.
Why not nominate J-Lo?!? Not only is she Latina, she’s at least interesting and smart. And she has a fundamental suitability to the country’s biggest bench.
FINALLY, we have a member of La Raza (THE RACE) on the high court, to advance OUR agenda.
Our Motto: “For the RACE, everything. For those outside the RACE, nothing.”
Viva La Raza!! Reconquista!

I know she will be great. Too many white people around. To hell with them all. Why do white people get to vote. Give us our land back to Mexico!!!!! Hope she will get it done. Long live Mexivo. VIVA Chavez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Viva Fidel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Viva Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This SC nominee is a radical appointee. She creates law instead
of interprets it … contrary to the historical role of the court.
Her statements clearly show her bias towards objectivity (when it
comes to race issues).
She will be the next Justice (not to my liking), but BHO won and we have to live with that. Time to wake-up America…it’s going to be a long 4 years.
She is a disgrace to the bench. It has nothing to do with her race, but much to do with her racism. The 1964 Civil Rights Act was passed to **prevent** the use of racial tests for public or other offices. That she supported *throwing out* qualified candidates because *they did not meet her racial test* is disgusting, and by the way shows it to be manifestly true that Obama is a liar: he said he *opposed* this sort of thing but now *he sends a racist to the Supreme Court*. What could one expect from a guy whose pastor vented racist hysteria for all those years and then: he lied about knowing about it? I guess the white dyslexic guy who bought all the study aids with his own money and then worked his butt off to pass the exam is less of a human being than old Sotomayor because his skin color isn’t quite right: the whole test should be thrown out until those passing it meet her color test. That is Obama justice. It is contrary to our constitution, but who cares: Newsweek can put him on the cover another ten or twenty times and explain why he is actually better than the Pope at governing the Catholic Church. Heil Obama, making the nation safe for The Race.
I think we should have David Duke on the supreme court as well. He’ll keep Sonya company.
Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or any other political party proponent: If there is one discussion on which we all appear to agree, it is WE AS INDIVIDUALS DO NOT HAVE A REAL VOICE IN THE GOVERNMENT. If the Dems are in, they get their appointees, if the Republicans are in, the same. IF the majority of US citizens voice their displeasure with a federal government decision, we are “acting like children”. Does your vote count? SURE! Does it mean anything about policy? NOPE.
Keeping the same politicians in office has given ALL of us the same results: they get what THEY want, we get what THEY want. We need TERM LIMITS on Senators, Congressmen AND Supreme Court Justices. To appoint an individual to the Supreme Court for life is a slap in the face to every citizen. If a Democrat President is in office and has the opportunity to appoint a Supreme Court Justice, the US is stuck with a Liberal interpretation of the Law. If a Republican President appoints a Supreme Court Justice, the US is stuck with a Conservative interpretation of the Law. The irony of the interpretations, by EITHER party appointee, is that political views trump the Constitution.
Get rid of all the garbage in DC every EIGHT YEARS at the most. Make Senate terms 4 years and keep Congressmen terms to 2 years. Supreme Court to be flushed every eight years.
I can’t wait to see Scalia write rings around her opinions.
She is just one more loon. The USA has gone totally insane. Boycott the 16th Amendment.
Sotomayor is GREAT, forget study, change your skin color, dye hair, name, check that minority box and expect placement. Life never was fair anyway, and you don’t have to worry about a white/asian revolution they have no gun rights under Sotomayor and between the criminals and the authorities you can cow, imprison and kill all those citizens who got ahead unfairly, by hard work, networking and brains. Life is wonderful!
Golly what a wonderful justice she will make. Can’t wait to have her on the court. She is our sunshine, our only sunshine, she makes us happy when skies are blue…………………………….

I think she will make a WONDERFUL JUSTICE.
We have too many white firefighters now anyway.
She represents the AVERAGE AMERICAN, just as I have for the past 30 years.
- – - – - – -
The hypocrisy of the left knows no bounds.
When it’s someone who represents the “AVERAGE AMERICAN” on the left, it’s a good thing. When someone REALLY represents the average American on the right, he is stung up as a buffoon.
Bush? Clarence Thomas? Condi Rice? Palin?
I’m not saying I’m a fan of these four, but the double standard has gotten old.
This whole thing is stressing me out… I think I’ll relax with a new pair of briefs… http://www.californiabriefs.com
I don’t do anything except live off welfare and government handouts, and I’m all for Sotomayor. This country owes me everything, because my skin color is dark. I want people like her making all the decisions, giving people like me everything Whitey has earned and keeping him down. Oh, and Obama rocks. He making sure we all be jammin’ to gansta’ rap and doin’ drugs.
She is a terrible pick by a terrible president. But, what did we expect him to do?
We get the government we deserve. Live with it.
She will be the next SC justice.
because she is puerto rican right? that is why you are against her.
The Ricci decision makes it clear that Sotomayor is not qualified to be a judge in any court, much less the highest court in the land. Not only should she not be considered for the Supreme Court, she should be removed from the bench and forever barred from ever being a judge again. Every day she remains a judge is a day that innocent people will be mistreated as a result of being judged by the color of their skin.
The difference in one candidate vs another is not as significant as the fact that the supreme court has proven that justice is not blind – and that individuals who create laws determine our fate – this is an opportunity for the public to vent, as though they really have anything to say about their fate or know what they are talking about. The so called rule of law is tainted by those few powerful individuals who influence the creation of the law – in computer jargon it’s called garbage-in garbage-out.
As a person of color and a non-achiever, I support sotomayor to look after my rights. I do not want the productive person of america getting more than me. I deserve just as much as any hard-working person.
WHY BOTHER WITH CONFIRMATION. THE FIX IS IN.
In my spanish community we do not considered Sotomayor Spanish, she is a puerto Rican that have live all her live in New York and never hang out with spanish. Puerto Rican are just Puerto Rican they do not think they are spanish
on top of that I don’t think she speak spanish that well.
Ex Bronxite is correct about Sotomayor’s background. She grew up solidly middle class as did the other great Bronx fraud and private school grad J-Lo. To her credit, she and her brother took avantantage of opportunities open to them. The truth is while white girls with similar background and SAT scores were directed toward nursing school, Sonia was given open access to Princeton. This says nothing about her Supreme Court qualifications, it is just the way it was in NY in the 1970′s (and today from what I hear). You all can judge her qualifications for a life appointment to the Supreme Court yourselves.
PS- In case you were wondering, the Bronx Catholic School network is a relatively small one. If someone at Spellman got into Princeton, we would know out about it at Hayes and vice versa.
I think she will make a WONDERFUL JUSTICE.
We have too many white firefighters now anyway.
She represents the AVERAGE AMERICAN, just as I have for the past 30 years.
