Republicans: Forget Gay Marriage, Focus on Economy

Several Republican lawmakers including Senate Minority Leader Peter Bragdon and House Assistant Minority Leader Gene Chandler urged their Democratic colleagues in Concord today to forget trying to pass legislation legalizing gay marriage and instead focus on the economy, jobs and the budget.

The legislators also called on Gov. John Lynch to veto the current gay marriage legislation, which they said he has promised to do, because the state House of Representatives yesterday failed to pass an amendment accommodating Lynch’s demands.

Instead, the Republicans would like to see the gay marriage question put to the voters through a non-binding referendum in the near future.
