Manny Ramirez has been suspended for 50 games after Major League Baseball announced that he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs.
Manny released a statement through the Player’s association that read:
“Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me,” Ramirez said. “Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now.
“I do want to say one other thing; I’ve taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons. I want to apologize to Mr. McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, Mr. Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans. LA is a special place to me and I know everybody is disappointed. So am I. I’m sorry about this whole situation.”
The suspension is expected to begin with tonight’s game where the Dodgers are scheduled to play the Nationals. It is unclear as of yet what the substance was.
Manny’s positive test has set the baseball world on fire and marks another sad day for America’s past time. The prolific slugger is by far the largest profile player to receive a suspension for using banned substances and he has shaken the sport to its core. With Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez, two of the game’s all-time best hitters having been exposed as cheaters, changes are surely coming in baseball.
