Shea-Porter Staff Seeks “Refuge” from Tea Bag

Taxpayer tea parties have rattled some politicians in Washington, as thousands have gathered in cities across America to object to President Obama’s spending policies. But no politician was rattled as severely as the staff of Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) was yesterday.
After opening an envelope containing a teabag and marked “Tea Protest” in the Congresswoman’s Manchester office, Shea-Porter’s staff called Capitol Police and city police and firefighters.
The authorities instructed Shea-Porter’s staff to seek “refuge” as they performed field tests on the substance contained in the tea bag. It turned out to be green tea.
The culprit was a Pelham, NH man named Michael Yannetti, who objects to $3.6 trillion in new federal spending. Charges will not be filed against him, police say.
There was no indication that the whole affair was an April Fool’s joke. UPDATE: A reader observes that it is unclear from news reports whether the tea was in a bag or loose in the envelope.
Regarding the Tea Parties, although it warms my heart that so many people are doing something to voice there opinions I feel it sends a very veg message. It reminds me of the anarchist in Europe. Just sending politicians tea bags does not tell them what you are for or exactly what you are against. In this way the protest is diluted. To have any real effect on them I feel we need to be more specific. Are you against taxes or spending? Maybe it’s both. Maybe you would just like to see some honesty in government. I think the next step has to be to get behind a cause or a strong candidate who supports a cause. Something that is specific. Maybe it would be the Flat Tax or the Fair Tax or even a balanced budget amendment. If we could only focus our concerns then and only then would they start to pay attention.
Instead of teabags, we need to use ballots. I am very depressed about the incompetent, self-centered people that our inaction has allowed to be in the positions of power that they now occupy.
It’s amazing, the liberals are sooo out of touch with America that they weren’t even expecting those tea bags. I guess they are just too busy spending our money. It’s time to get them all out of office. Suprised they haven’t voted themselves another pay raise since they think they are doing such a great job. I’ve sent my tea bags and plan to attend the Tea Parties! It’s time to wake up America before we loose our freedom!

Obama has an 81% favorable rating among Americans under 30. The Congressional Republicans get an 8% favorable rating.
If the “tea parties” represent anyone, it’s surely not those Americans who are under 30, so who do they represent, exactly? (other than Limbaugh, Malkin, Reynolds, et al….)
While I certainly respect the intent of the “tea parties” for people to speak their minds, I do NOT respect the rhetoric which is flowing from this pseudo-movement or the misplaced rage therein. If I was a Democrat (I’m not, though I did vote for Obama), and I wanted to attend a tea party and engage in respectful debate with my fellow citizens, would I be welcomed or beaten about the head? Judging by the lunacy on display here on this board, I increasingly suspect the latter. This means the tea parties are not about “peaceful dissent” at all but just massive bitch-fests by people still coming to grips that the election did not turn out the way they wanted it to.
I don’t know why she would be surprised! The White House should be getting thousands of tea bags between now & April 15th. Didn’t any of you get the email about the tea party in Washington on April 15th? If you cannot make it then send tea bags to the White House to get there by the 15th.
If the wimps in Congress are so paranoid as to not know tea when they see it and smell it they may need professional help. There is nothing wrong with sending tea (loose or otherwise) to them, and any of them are idiots for making a spectacle of it. Of course most of them are low on the IQ thing anyway which is why it’s scary having them responsible for “fixing” the economy. It never ceases to amaze me how these blunderheads keep getting reelected. It’s a sad commentary on the intelligence level of the average voter though.
I just wish the “tea bags” were actually going to get the desired response. When the original protest took place there was an understanding that the “People” had input, some voice that had to be heard. Now, these crooks just say what you want to hear to get elected , then when they are in office they do what fills their pockets.
I believe our system is broken, we are sinking as a nation and losing all that we were founded on. I truly fear for our country and it’s survival in having any of the base we were founded on left after this president gets through with us. I hope the people that voted for President Obama realize what they have done before it is too late.

Everyone I work with is out buying guns, ammunition, taking money out of banks etc. out of fear of the changes Obama is making. I unfortunately feel they are right.

I do this to all the Rats in Washington. If you try to send an email a lot of the rats will check your zip code and not allow it if you are not in their district. Easy work around is to look up their office address from their “so self important” web sire and use their posted address. Its got to drive them crazy
I’d like to second Marie’s comment, at the top. A teabag clipped to a post card avoids the obvious risks encountered in this case – the tea WAS loose in the envelope. The doc clearly risked eliciting the response he did from Shea-Porter’s office where, actually, the Capital Police told the staff to call the Manchester Police.
I think the tea bag protest is legitimate, even cute, but trying to make something of Shea-Porter’s staff carefully handling a substance arriving loose in an envelope is a bit of a stretch, don’t you think?

i think the idea of sending tea bags is great, however times are tough. i have always made 2 cups of tea from one bag(just like grandma). folks, send in your used ones. show that you too are fiscally responsible.

I have sent tea bags(empty) to all fo the reps. I could find adds. for and I started calling for vote them out over two years ago and glad that some one else shears my point of view. I am a two war vet (31.5yrs. of service) and worried about the way this great country is going, but I still have faith in the true Americans that they will put a stop to this crap real soon.(next election).

I have a feeling The President will not be talking about the number of tea bags he rexieves or the number of Tea Parties that will be held.. He only seems to talk about the people that support his socialist ideas. If he is a President for all the people he will address the discontent. He needs to understand we will address the discontent in the next election. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will be in the minority again but will we be able to overturn the damage by then?
On April 15, everyone should send an electronic tea bag to all three members of Congress who are supposed to be representing you….whether you can go to a party or not. We should flood each and every office with the message ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!! If you are lucky enough to attend a party, remind everyone you meet to send an electronic tea bag when they get home. The mainstream media may ignore our efforts by not reporting on them, but a flood of e-mails can grind the Congressional system to a virtual stand-still and that will get noticed.

I am going to a teaparty. I have decided that I am not going to sit by and allow all of this to happen, not only to me and my family, but to my country. Have these politians heard or read the constitution? We will not have any rights left or any money by the time they get done. I am certainly going to vote for new replacements but not before investigating them and if they don’t work out then vote them out the next election. They are working for me and I think that they are about to find out that we mean it. The new Pres. got his budget and he stated that he will be taking names of Dems that dared to vote against it. I think that when an elected official takes the oath of office,that is their contract with the people,in their oath it clearly states that they will uphold and defend the constitution of the United States,therefore any votes or sctions against the constitution should put them in breach of contract and be just cause to remove them from office.

You know there are a lot of great posts on here, and I want to thank Fox for this venue to communicate with other like minded people, and even some of another view for that matter.
I think {Fed Up} hit the nail on the head when he said our legislators were not elected to represent the President. But you know, by the same token they weren’t elected to represent some special interest, or some radical form of government either. They were elected to represent the people, and what is best for our country. I’m really tired of government trying to decide what they can do “To Me”! I’m an ex-cop and to my way of thinking their job is to Protect and Serve, not to Dominate and Subjugate. I don’t need a handout, I can take care of my self. I just want to be left alone to live my life without their interference. Just reread the 10th Amendment to our constitution, and then damn it all try following it . If they’re unfamiliar with it they might find it worth their perusal, and consideration. It really is a pretty SPECIAL AMENDMENT. They can find it in the U.S. Constitution, I think some of them might have heard of it, just not recently. However just for their edification it was proposed on 9/25/1789, then ratified on 12/15/1791, and it goes something like this:

My biggest concern right now isn’t the economy, or AIG, or Universal Health, or the Saltwater Marsh Mouse in Pelosi’s back yard, or a high speed rail line from Las Vegas to Hollywood. It’s govenment intrusion into all segments of life that they have no right being involved in.
Come on! Why the big deal? It sounds like this Congresswoman was 1) Going for Sympathy, 2) Ill-informed about the nationwide Tea Party movement to send tea bags to elected officials, 3) Trying to use this as political leverage to diminish to voice of her constituents, or 4) All of the above. These politicians should be scared. The reason the people are taking up these messures is because of the officials ingnoring why they were elected to begin with. Take a photo of, or make a copy of a tea bag. That way no one opening the mail is “scared”. If you can’t attend a Tea Party on 4/15 go to the tea party website and get bumper stickers, tee shirts,etc to show support. Also there is a website http://www.discountbookdistributors.com\teapartybumpersticker where you can get a “free” bumper sticker. They only ask that you pay .87 postage.
Everyone who loves their freedom in America, liberty and the ability to live your life as you see fit needs to continue to bombard these turncoats in Washington. They have been living high on the hog (no pun intended) for to long!!
It’s all about Power! The Democrat Contress scumbags will do anything to keep it. So will Obama. He micro-manages everything with an iron fist. He’s about “change” alright, transforming this country into a fascist or socialist state, I’m not sure which yet. But we the people have power too! Our founding fathers gave it to us. I think it’s perhaps time for the average citizen to start running for office.Perhaps we could adopt the motto,”It’s not what we can do for you,but what we won’t do to you”.When someone runs,and wins,by saying if it isn’t constitutional,and if it isn’t vital to the national insterest,I won’t vote for it. Perhaps then the fear of God (and the average citizen) will make other Congressmen and Senators wise up.

If she hasn’t heard about the Tea Party movement she is REALLY out of touch. But it is best to send just the tag and string or even a note saying “this represents a tea bag”.
We the People need to INSIST on TERM LIMITS for these DC fools! Send pics of or actual tea bags. But they MUST hear from us! We’re mad as hell!

Tea Parties are not just against Obama’s spending alone but includes the House and the Senate which goes blindly along with Obama. Biden, Pelosi, Reed, Franks, Geithner, Bernanke, Emanuel.Better read before signing. They need to realize they are not the Boss but that the Boss is watching. “WE THE PEOPLE”
I sent my teabag to the white house – hoping big spender will be back by then. It is a small gesture but I am not able to take time like all those dem demonstrators (I secretly think they are being paid to demonstrate or are we paying for their being able to demonstrate and NOT go to WORK!!!! We need a lot more help to make any CHANGES! But we should start now – they have been doing this for years.
Maybe her staff now knows how the rest of us feel when we are expecting our yearly property tax bill. While our properties have gone down as much as 20% in value, our taxes have risen at even higher percentages. Why do I have to live within my means, and the Federal Government does not? The way to ‘fix’ the economy is not tax and spend. It has never worked, it will never work.

What a bunch of traidorist wimps we have elected to Congress. My Senator’s office won’t even tell me when or if he’s coming home for Easter break so we can hve a face to face meeting. These rats promise everythng to everyone when they want us to vote for them. Then hide after they are elected. Thais is the best, and only solution. We must rid Washington of all of them. And when we are inteviweing new people for the job, we must make it clear to them that we hiring them, we are the boss. The have to be very specific how they are going to solve the problems facing our Nation. We wnat what is good for America, and the American people.

I think it is reasonable to send just the paper teabag label or just a postcard with a teabag drawing to safely get our message to ALL our elected officials.
