A few final voters trickle in to vote in Hampton
So New Hampshire, after two years it is finally time to sit and wait. The polls are finally closing and soon the results will finally be here. We’ll fade from the national stage for at least two years (we hope) and we’ll get a much deserved vacation from national politics and pollsters. This historic race that has been being fought here in the Granite State for over two years is now finally going to leave us.
Will Obama take New Hampshire or will McCain stage yet another comeback here in the Granite State? Recent polls have favored Obama, but in the words of Obama himself, “for those who are getting a little cocky, I’ve got two words for you: New Hampshire.”
The biggest news story of the day came at about noon when the New Hampshire Republican Party Committee filed an emergency petition over polling observers and their ability to oversee new registrations that were taking place at polling stations. Both Republicans and Democrats are allowed to have political observers at each polling station to ensure that there is no foul play. “The problem is that our observers in the polling places have been denied reasonable access to the same-day registration tables,” said NH Republican Party attorney James Merrill to the Union Leader earlier today.
The petition asked “to provide designated polling challengers meaningful access to same day registration tables at polling places throughout New Hampshire. Such access is presently being denied and depriving citizens of New Hampshire”
Judge Gillian Abramson ruled that official observers should be allowed to be close enough to “see and hear” the undergoing same-day registrations and left it up to local officials to determine what the exact distance was.
So it seems like there is nothing to do now, but to wait. We’ll keep Now!Hampshire updated with news as it rolls in. Sit tight and you’ll know soon enough.
